GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing team placed second at the West Coast Conference Rowing Championship Saturday held on Lake Natoma at the Sacramento State Aquatics Center in Gold River, Calif.
The University of San Diego won the crown for the fourth time in five years after winning all three races. The Toreros earned the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship with the victory.
"We got beat by a better team in San Diego today but it wasn't by a lack of effort or any fault in our kids," stated Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae after the championship. "We did everything we could and in the end it wasn't enough. Now we have to do everything and more to not be in the same position next year."
In the final point standings, San Diego topped Gonzaga 42 to 36. Saint Mary's College finished third (27), followed by the University of Portland (27). The Gaels earned the tiebreaker over the Pilots with a higher finish in the Varsity 8+ race. Loyola Marymount finished fifth (18), Creighton took sixth (12) and Santa Clara rounded out the standings in seventh (5).
The Bulldogs, who were the reigning WCC Champions, placed second in all three races Saturday.
"All three races went similarly," explained Putyrae. "San Diego got out to a lead early and we did our best to stick with them and to push back - and were successful to a certain agree - but ultimately they pulled away from us in each race."
Madison Keaty, Malori McGill and Kara Soucek were each named to the All-West Coast Conference team. Keaty and McGill earned the honor for the second-consecutive year.
San Diego head coach Kim Cupini was named the WCC Coach of the Year, while Torero Michelle Campbell was tabbed WCC Rower of the Year. USD's Erica Mayer was also named WCC Coxswain of the Year and teammate Nneka Anyanwu garnered WCC Newcomer of the Year.
