SPOKANE, Wash. -- Vanderbilt women's soccer ended a Gonzaga comeback attempt with a golden goal in the first overtime period, escaping with a 3-2 win Friday.
The Commodores' (1-2-0) used a pair of goals from Simone Charley, including the game-winner, to pull away with the victory. Karley Baggerly had the Zags first brace since Heather Johnson accomplished the feat last season at San Francisco.
Gonzaga took 14 shots in the game, 10 in the second, and put 10 on goal. The Bulldogs' forced VU's Christina Ogunsami into seven saves. The Commodores ended with seven shots, with four going on goal.
Vanderbilt's Cristina De Zeeuw opened the scoring nine minutes into the game. She received Lydia Simmons' corner kick off of a bounce and drove it into the GU net. Eleven minutes later, Charley got a great through ball from Sasha Gray just inside the 18-yard box. Charley then took a couple dribbles before sliding it low into the corner of the net.
The Bulldogs' began to pressure VU early in the second half. Five minutes into the half, Baggerly had great individual effort, stealing the ball from a Commodore defender, then turning and striking past Ogunsami.
With just 16 seconds left in regulation, Baggerly brought in a long ball from Kelly Bieraugel and slid it to the far post for the equalizer.
"I thought Karley's goals were exceptional," GU Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "In the second half, we exhibited the type of play and character we are striving for."
Charley struck again three minutes into overtime with the game-winner.
"We put ourselves in a tough spot by giving up those two goals in the first half," Edwards said. "They have a special player up front. She's a game-changer."
Charley, an All-SEC performer last season, took five of Vanderbilt's seven shots. Both of her shots on goal went into the net.
Kristin Hayman led GU (0-1-1) with four shots, placing two on goal. Baggerly finished with three shots, all on goal. The junior moves into 10th all-time at Gonzaga with 12 goals in her career. Heather Johnson also had two shots on goal, both coming in the first half.
Aliyah Miller had a great chance in the first half on a volley that was struck well, but was punched by Ogunsami and hit the crossbar. With 29:38 left in regulation, Hayman had a great shot cleared off the line by Erin Myers after it got by Ogunsami.
"I'm optimistic we can take the positives away from this game and put together a full 90 minutes Sunday," Edwards said.
The Zags welcome CSU Bakersfield for a 1 p.m. start at Luger Field Sunday. The Roadrunners (1-0-1) played to a 1-1 draw at Eastern Washington Friday. GU leads the all-time series against Bakersfield 3-0-0, including a 2-1 win in double-overtime last season on the road.
