SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Gonzaga men's rowing team battled with Santa Clara and UC-San Diego on Friday at the Port of Sacramento race course.
The teams battled conditions that featured a tough, quartering headwind that worsened throughout the race, but the competition was solid. Gonzaga placed four boats on the water on the day, pulling in second-place finishes in three of the four races.
"I thought the JV8, 3V8 had solid races" head coach Dan Gehn said. "I was disappointed in the V8's performance. I didn't feel they put to use what we have picked up over the last couple days. We will look to see some improvement in the scrimmage tomorrow morning. The N8 raced in bad conditions compared to the other races, but was able to take second."
Gonzaga's V8 squad turned in a time of 6:24.63, but came in third, 10 seconds behind second-place UCSD. In the JV8 race, the Zags' were just five seconds out of first and put nearly 13 seconds between themselves and third-place Santa Clara.
The 3V8 squad took second place as well with a time of 6:59.02, 12 seconds behind the leaders. Then in the worst conditions of the day with the wind, GU's Novice 8 crew battled through to get a second-place finish with a time of 8:13.
Gonzaga will wrap the trip to Sacramento with a scrimmage on Saturday before taking on Washington State next weekend.
