SILVER LAKE, Wash. - The 19th-ranked women's rowing team's Varsity 8 took the lone GU victory on Saturday at Silver Lake, Wash., against No. 10 Washington State.
The teams endured water conditions that included a restart and seaweed that caused a slowdown.
Gonzaga took the lone victory in the Varsity 8 across four eight-person boats and two fours. In the Varsity 8 race, both teams encountered seaweed in the first 500 meters, which forced a restart with WSU ahead by seven lengths. The race restarted with that separation, but WSU caught a crab with 300 meters to go and the Zags finished 1.2 seconds ahead with a time of 6:40.61.
Each race finished with less than a 10-second difference in hard fought day, but the Cougars won the remaining five races.
In the fours, WSU earned a seven-second win in the Varsity 4 and a two-second win in the Second Varsity 4.
In the eights, the Second Varsity crews were each slowed by seaweed as well, but WSU went on to win by nearly seven seconds with a time of 6:54.79. The Third Varsity 8 squads had the biggest difference of the day at 9.8 seconds while the Fourth Varsity 8 had a seven-second differential.
Gonzaga will be back on the water next weekend at the two-day San Diego Crew Classic on April 2-3 with both days scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
