Bay Area Intercollegiate First Round Results
FAIRFAX, Calif.--The Gonzaga University women's golf team began a rain-filled and rain-shortened Bay Area Intercollegiate Monday, finishing the first round in a tie for eighth at The Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
Rain fell sporadically throughout the day and throughout the weekend over the Par-72, 6,112-yard course, causing three rain delays and the cancelation of a second round on Monday. As a result, the tournament was shortened to just 36 holes instead of the previously-anticipated 54.
"They have had six inches of rain in three days; the course is saturated," said GU head coach Brad Rickel. "It rained very hard a couple of times and the course just can't handle any more rain."
Freshman Bianca Pagdanganan is the top Bulldog after round one, having carded 74 strokes (+2) during the day. She saw a rough start, playing her first five holes in +4, but she tallied three birdies and a bogey during her final 10 for the 74. She's tied for 13th with six other players.
Just one stroke back, senior Raychelle Santos is tied for 19th at 3-over-par 75. She counted eight pars and a birdie during her first nine holes before taking five bogeys and a birdie during her final nine.
Next up for Gonzaga, Jena Gao carded a 5-over-par 77, tying for 32nd. She parred 13 holes on the day and is tied for eighth-most in the category. Gao is one stroke ahead of junior Ciera Min, who shot 78 (+6) on the day. She posted 10 pars and a pair of birdies during the round and is tied for 39th.
Rounding out the Zag lineup is Dania Uy, who shot 86 (+14) on the rain-soaked course.
In all, the Zags counted 304 strokes (+16) during the tournament's first round. They're tied with Indiana for eighth place in the tournament but sit just five strokes back of fourth and nine short of the top spot. Oregon State currently holds that team lead with a score of 295 (+7) while Colorado's Alexis Keating and Indiana's Erin Harper are tied for medalist honors at 70 (-2).
"The team played hard and handled the delays fine," Rickel said. "Bianca and Raychelle were solid the entire day. Jena played hard on a course that is playing extremely long, which is not her strength. If we have a solid day tomorrow, we can have a good result."
The second and now final round of the Bay Area Intercollegiate will now begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, again at The Meadow Club.
