FAIRFAX, Calif.--For the second time this season, two GU women's golfers finished in the top 10 of a tournament as Bianca Pagdanganan and Raychelle Santos helped the Zags move up the leaderboard during the final round of the Bay Area Intercollegiate Tuesday.
Pagdanganan posted her second consecutive top-5 finish, finishing fifth with a two-day total of even-par 144. The freshman played both of her nines in 1-under 35 Tuesday, counting five birdies on the day. By going under par for the sixth time this season, she moved eight spots up the leaderboard between the first and final rounds. She now has three top-5 finishes on the year, including a fourth-place finish at The Gold Rush and medalist honors at Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.
A senior, Santos also saw a good day on the links at The Meadow Club, shooting 1-under-par 71 to move into a tie for eighth. She played her first nine holes at 3-under with four birdies and finished with seven pars and two bogeys during her final nine. In all, she counted 146 strokes (+2) at the Bay Area Intercollegiate and picked up her first top-10 finish of the year. The La Quinta, Calif., native climbed 11 spots on the leaderboard Tuesday.
Next up for the Zags, junior Ciera Min posted her best round of the spring season, carding a 2-over-par 74 Tuesday. The Hilo, Hawaii native parred 14 holes Tuesday, posting 24 pars during the tournament. She moved into a tie for 32nd with a two-round total of 152 (+8).
Freshman Jena Gao also parred 24 holes during the tournament, adding 11 of those Tuesday. She shot 80 (+8) during the final round and ended the tournament with a total of 157 (+13) and in a tie for 57th. Rounding out the GU lineup, Dania Uy cut eight strokes off her first-round score, shooting 6-over-par 78 during the final round. The Antipolo, Philippines native finished 67th with a two-round tally of 164 (+20).
As a team, the Zags counted 293 strokes (+5) Tuesday, one of the five best totals on the day. They moved up one spot into seventh with a two-round total of 597 (+21), one shot back of No. 11 Washington. No. 14 California took the tournament title with a score of 583 (+7), climbing into first place during Tuesday's final round. The Golden Bears' Hannah Suh earned medalist honors with at 140 (-4).
"I am very happy with our competitive spirit today," said Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel. "Bianca has continued to be confident and focused; it was a great finish for her. Raychelle has shown she is going to continue to keep playing great golf. Ciera really showed a great attitude today and got the most out of her round, and Dania worked really hard to help us today. All in all, it was a really good day for us and this tournament finish will help improve our ranking."
The Zags will have two weeks until their next competitive round, the first loop of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on Tuesday, March 22. That tournament will take place on Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course in Kane'ohe, Hawaii.
