SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gonzaga's 15th-ranked women's rowing team battled against some of the nation's best on the first day of action at the Lake Natoma Invitational in Sacramento, Calif.
"We thought the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 had strong races in the morning, and the Second Varsity 4 and Second Varsity 8 had strong races in the afternoon," head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "We made some adjustments in the 2V4 and 2V8 between the morning and afternoon."
In the morning session, Gonzaga claimed three second-place finishes in their heats and one third. The Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 all held their own against Sacramento State, but were unable to knockoff No. 7 Stanford.
The V8 came the closest, coming in just five seconds behind the Cardinal with a time of 6:27.65 over the 2,000-meter length. Stanford finished in 6:22.47. In the 2V8 just prior, Gonzaga turned in a time of 6:44.0, just over 11 seconds behind Stanford's 6:33.30 and 16 seconds ahead of Sacramento State.
In the morning fours, GU's Varsity 4 was again second behind Stanford with a time of 7:24.58, and the Second Varsity 4 was third behind No. 1 Brown and No. 18 Notre Dame with a time of 7:41.59.
In the afternoon heats, Gonzaga's top three boats faced off against No. 2 Cal and WCC foe Loyola Marymount, finishing second behind Cal in all three races: V8, 2V8 and V4.
The V8 came in with a time of 6:38.56, 15 seconds behind Cal at 6:23.37. The 2V8 nearly equaled its time from the morning session at 6:45.70, just over 10 seconds behind Cal and 22 seconds ahead of LMU. In the V4, Gonzaga's second-place showing came in a time of 7:46.83, 30 seconds ahead of third-place LMU.
On Sunday, Gonzaga's top three boats will be back on the water in heats against No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 16 Iowa and No. 18 Notre Dame beginning with the V4 at 8:30 a.m.
