Complete NCAA Regional Rankings
SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's rowing team continued to break program records with the release of the NCAA regional rankings on Wednesday, which slotted GU fifth in a powerful Region 5.
The ranking marks the first time in program history GU has been in the region's top six as a team, and it comes in one of the toughest regions in the nation. In the regional rankings, Gonzaga's No. 6 spot as a team was accompanied by its Varsity 8 boat being ranked No. 6 and its Second Varsity 8 boat being ranked No. 5.
Of the five teams ahead of Gonzaga: Stanford, Cal, Washington, USC and Washington State, all are ranked in the top 13 nationally. Of those teams, three are in the top six nationally with No. 2 Cal, No. 4 Washington and No. 6 Stanford according to the US Rowing/CRCA national poll.
The Zags, which are ranked No. 17 nationally, are prepping for their defense of the West Coast Conference crown in just over a week on May 14 in Sacramento, Calif. Last season, GU won the league title and the automatic berth into the NCAA Championships for the second time in three years.
GU was selected as the league favorite by the WCC coaches in a preseason poll earlier this spring. Check back to GoZags.com next week for a full preview of the conference championships.
