2016-17 SCHEDULE
SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga men's golf team released their 2016-17 schedule Tuesday. The Zags play in four events during the fall, beginning with the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in Pullman on Sept. 12, and then six tournaments in the spring.
The Zags return to the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate after competing in the event in 2012 and 2013. GU placed fifth in the 2012 and eighth in 2013. This year marks the tournament's eighth occurrence in Pullman, but the fifth year that Itani Quality Homes has sponsored. This will be the fifth appearance in the tournament for the Bulldogs. Washington State is the defending champion and has won the title every year except for 2011 and 2014.
Gonzaga also returns to the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational for the first time since 2013. James Fahy led the Zags to a 14th place finish three years ago. This will be the seventh annual Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational. The event features a talented field of teams from across the country. Last year, Colorado rallied to tie Missouri-Kansas City for the team title.
Sean Walsh became the first Bulldog in eight years to take medalist honors at a tournament at last season's Saint Mary's Invitational. GU comes back to the Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif., for the 11th annual Saint Mary's Invite. Walsh finished atop the leaderboard at five-under par after a final round of 66, one stroke off of his own low round program record.
Once again, the Bulldogs close the fall at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii, from Nov. 24-26. It's the third year of the growing event, and the third straight appearance from Gonzaga in the tournament. The field has included some of the top programs from across the country. Two years ago, the Zags recorded the program record for lowest team total in a round at 274. Last year, GU placed 11th at the event. Walsh opened the tournament with a 67 (-4), which was the second-lowest round on the team in 2015-16.
Gonzaga opens its spring slate at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Jan. 23. The two-day tournament is played at the Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. Last year's event attracted 17 talented programs, including Texas, which held off Washington for the team title.
The Zags return to the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Feb. 17-19. Sean Walsh took medalist honors at last season's tournament on the Classic Club Golf Course in Palm Desert, Calif. As a team, GU placed ninth.
On March 12-14, the Bulldogs host the Bandon Dunes Championship for the eighth straight season. The tournament has rotated between the resort's four beautiful courses on the Oregon coast the past seven years. This season, the championship will be played on the Old MacDonald Course.
Gonzaga will play at the Eugene Country Club in the Duck Invitational on March 27-28. The course hosted last year's NCAA National Championships. The tournament was not played last year, but returns for the 27th edition of the event this season. The Bulldogs have appeared in the last four Duck Invitationals, finishing ninth in the last showing in 2015.
The Zags make their annual appearance in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Ariz., on April 10-11. GU has appeared in the event in each of the past seven years. They won the tournament in 2013 by six strokes. Last season, the Bulldogs came in ninth place.
The 2017 West Coast Conference Championships will be played in Provo, Utah. The Riverside Country Club hosts the 54-hole tournament on April 20-22. Gonzaga placed fifth at last year's WCC Championships.
