TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Gonzaga men's golf team opened their spring schedule under windy conditions at the Arizona Intercollegiate at the Sewailo Golf Course Monday. The second round was called due to darkness and will resume Tuesday morning.
The Zags were led by David Ganz with a three-over (74) first round. He was tied for 19th, but currently sits in a tie for 33rd place. The junior had five birdies in Round 1. He is six-over after 13 holes in the second round.
Ryan Gaske sits in a tie for 23rd after Day 1. He climbed up the leaderboard through 14 holes in Round 2, after carding a 78 (+7) in the opening round. Gaske is at three-over heading into Tuesday on Hole 15.
Nick Nolan and Angus Montgomery had 81 (+10) and 83 (+12) rounds to start the tournament. Nolan has bounced back in the second round at eight-over, and Montgomery is 11-over in Round 2. Nolan (T78th place) and Montgomery (86th place) are both through 14 holes in the second round. Tyler Munetake is in a tie for 89th place at 12-over after 14 holes in Round 2. He had an 88 (+17) in the first round.
As a team, Gonzaga sits in 18th place at 60-over. The Bulldogs were tied for 14th after a first round 316 (+32).
"Rough day for us today," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "The wind picked up to 30 miles per hour for most of the day and we just weren't ready for that type of challenge this early into the school year. In the end, it was the reason for so many big numbers on holes and that was huge in where we currently stand.
"Unfortunately, with the high winds, the pace of play was very slow and we weren't able to finish. We'll head out tomorrow and finish our second round then continue on to our final round. Hopefully today we learned a lot about ourselves and we're able to apply it during tomorrow's play."
Oregon has a four-stroke lead over California on the team leaderboard. The Ducks are at 16-over. Wyndham Clark of Oregon tops the individual leaderboard at one-under.
The second round will resume at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The third round will follow. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
