Nolan Tied for 15th after First Round

PALM DESERT, Calif. - Nick Nolan is one-over (73) after the first round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The freshman is tied for 15^th leading the Gonzaga men's golf team Friday.

Nolan finished Round 1 with 11 pars and three birdies. He was even-par after the first nine holes, before going one-over on the front-nine to finish the day.

As a team the Zags are in 12^th. GU was 15-over (303) in the first round. The Bulldogs are just three strokes out of the top 10.

Ryan Gaske was a stroke behind at two-over (74) in a tie for 28^th. He made six birdies in the first round, which was the second most in the 124-golfer field on Day 1. Chris Mogg carded a 76 (+4) and is tied for 57^th. He was also even-par after the first nine holes and made four birdies.

David Ganz (T99th) and Ben DuBois (T113th) went eight-over (80) and 11-over (83) Friday.

"It got real windy the second half of our round and the guys showed great spirit and composure," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Nick scrambled well throughout the round to post a great score in the difficult conditions. Ryan also played solid today and made a bunch of birdies. It was great to see Chris post a solid round after all the hard work he's been putting in."

Oregon leads the team leaderboard by seven strokes. The No. 10 Ducks are six-under (282). Oregon's Norman Xiong tops the individual leaderboard at five-under (67). Three golfers are two strokes behind in second.

"Tomorrow is supposed to bring rain rather than wind so the conditions will be quite a bit different," Gray said.

DuBois tees off first for the Bulldogs Saturday. He will start on Hole 1 at 6:50 a.m. Pacific Time. Live results from the second round will be available on GoZags.com.

The West Coast Conference released the coaches' preseason poll Friday. Gonzaga was slated sixth in the WCC preseason poll. BYU was selected as the preseason favorite, receiving seven of the nine first place votes. Saint Mary's and Pepperdine each received one first place vote.
