SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Gonzaga men's golf opened their season at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate Friday. David Ganz and Nick Nolan are both tied for 34th on the leaderboard following the first round at the Desert Forest Golf Club.
Ganz and Nolan were three-over par (75) in Round 1. Ganz had three birdies and nine pars. Nolan made two birdies with 12 pars. Both golfers were one-over through the first nine holes.
Chris Mogg is tied for 44th after carding a 77 (+5) in the first round. He was also one-over after nine holes, but went four-over on the final nine holes.
Tyler Munetake (T57) and Ben DuBois (T65) are seven-over (79) and eight-over (80). Munetake made 10 pars, while DuBois finished with 12. DuBois was one-under after 10 holes, and climbed into the top-10 on the leaderboard.
The Zags are tied for 11th at 18-over (306). Kent State leads the 13-team field at seven-under (281). The Golden Flashes have an eight-stroke lead over Arizona State and Minnesota.
"The course is unbelievably unforgiving with narrow fairways and brutal desert," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Miss the fairway and it's likely a double bogey or worse. We did a good job of keeping it out of the desert on our first nine holes (we started on 10), but had a few shots get away from us on the back, which resulted in some bigger scores.
"We played the back nine of the course, as well as, or better than top-50 programs. Just a few bad swings on the front nine was really the difference in our overall finish. Regardless, I'm very proud of how the team carried themselves today on such a difficult course to start the season."
Nolan tees off first for GU in the second round Saturday at 7:55 a.m. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
