Facing one of the best teams in the nation, the Zags' Domonique Garley grabbed the lone victory, while Graciela Rosas and Nevada Apollo forced third sets in their singles matches that went unfinished.
"We came up a little short today, but overall we saw a lot of good things," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "Michigan is a very talented team, but we know we can compete at that level. We are excited to get back at it tomorrow."
Garley dispatched of Michigan's Lera Patiuk in straight sets at the No. 5 singles spot with back-to-back 6-2, 6-2 sets. At No. 2, Rosas fought off a tough first set against 74th-ranked Chiara Lommer to win the second 6-4 and lead the third 1-0 when the dual match was clinched. At No. 3, Apollo also forced a third set with a second-set tiebreak win. That match was square at 1-1 in the third when the dual finished.
In doubles, the Zags fell behind by just a break in each match that finished with identical 6-4 scorelines at No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 1, the GU duo of Rosas and Sophie Whittle trailed 5-4 when the point was clinched.
Gonzaga will now face the loser of Saturday's other match between Brown and Tulsa on Sunday at 6:30 a.m. PT/9:30 a.m. ET in Ann Arbor, Mich.
