Zag freshman earns second All-Region honor in program history
NEW ORLEANS – Gonzaga's James Mwaura was recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Monday.
All-Region honorees for the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country season were recognized by the USTFCCCA following Regional Championship Weekend. A total of 225 men and 225 women from 150 different programs earned the distinction by finishing among the top-25 runners at one of nine regional sites across the country.
Mwaura had the best-ever finish by a Gonzaga men's runner at the 2018 NCAA West Regional Championships. The freshman broke the program's 10,000-meter course record with a time of 29:48.9 at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
Mwaura was the first Zag to run a sub-30-minute 10K, and the second GU runner to earn All-Region honors. Matthew Critchlow placed 18th at the 2015 regionals, becoming the first Bulldog to be tabbed All-Region.
This season, Mwaura became the program's first-ever West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. The Tacoma, Wash., native paced the Zag men to a third place team finish at the WCC Championships, with a ninth-place individual finish in Provo, Utah. He crossed the line at 23:57.7, after running with the front pack for the majority of the race.
Mwaura opened the season with back-to-back first-place finishes at the Clash of the Inland Northwest and the Cougar Classic. He placed 40th at the NCAA Pre-Nationals.
