Zags in 12th place at two-under
LAHAINA, Hawaii – Gonzaga's Matthew Ruel is three-under (68) after the first round of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic. The Zags are in 12th place as a team at two-under (282).
Ruel's round of 68 is the lowest total for GU this season. The redshirt sophomore made six birdies on Day 1. He also was three-under on the course's front-nine holes. Ruel is tied for 20th entering the second round.
Chris Mogg matched his career-low round with a 69 (-1) Friday. He made five birdies and 10 pars in the first round. The Sammamish, Wash., native is tied for 34th.
Grant Johnson is tied for 71st at one-over (72). He made 11 pars Friday. Charlie Magruder (73, +2) and Holden Backes (79, +8) are tied for 84th and 111th.
"Overall a decent start to the tournament," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Nice rounds from Matt and Chris made a big impact on getting us under-par for the day. Two more good rounds from Charlie and Grant rounded out our counting scores and have us around the middle of the pack in a strong field.
"While we finished at two-under for the day, we had it to eight-under at one point. A great sign for this young group that they can go low. I'm excited to see what the next two days will bring!"
Clemson leads the team leaderboard at 22-under (262). The Tigers have a four-stroke lead over California. UCLA's Patrick Murphy and Zack Gordon of Clemson top the 116-golfer field at eight-under (63).
Round 2 begins with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. Pacific Time. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
