Bulldogs win five-of-six singles matches and sweep doubles
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's tennis team had a nearly perfect opening day at the Gonzaga Invitational inside The Stevens Center Friday afternoon as it won five-of-six singles matches and swept doubles play.
"It was great to play at home in this environment," head women's tennis coach D.J. Gurule said. "I thought we competed well; we still have some things to work on but I think everyone is headed in the right direction."
The Zags opened play with doubles as Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas paired up to defeat Idaho's Marianna Petrei and Maggie Chen 6-3. Domonique Garley and Sara Komer picked up GU's second doubles win with a 6-4 win over Idaho's Laura Spataro and Marta Magalhaes, while Kate Ketels and Katie Day posted the final doubles win for the Bulldogs with a 6-1 rout over Idaho's Shion Watabe and Anna Findley.
"I think this event will really help us get ready for our demanding spring season," Gurule said.
Gonzaga nearly swept its singles matches as Garley, Rosas, Vlada Medvedcova, Day and Komer all recorded victories.
The Bulldogs continue play Saturday in the second day of the Gonzaga Invitational inside The Stevens Center. For live video click here and go to GoZags.com for updated scores and results.
