SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Gonzaga's
Kyle Thompson was named Academic All-West Coast Conference Monday.
Thompson, an Economics major, has a 3.36 grade point average. He opened the season with back-to-back third-place finishes at the Clash of the Inland Northwest and the Cougar Classic, before winning the Montana Invitational. The redshirt senior ran the 14
th-fastest in program history over an 8,000-meter course at the Cougar Classic at 24:17. He was honorable mention Academic All-WCC last season.
Five Zags were tabbed Academic All-WCC Honorable Mention this season.
Kelly Gilbert and
Aimee Piercy received honorable mention recognition for the second straight year, Gilbert boasts a 3.97 GPA as a Business Administration major. Piercy, also a Business Administration major, has a 3.38 GPA. She had a second-place finish at the Sasquatch Invitational and a sixth-place finish at the Clash of the Inland Northwest. She ran seventh-fastest 4K time in program history (14:29.1) at the Clash of the Inland Northwest.
Andrew Clusserath (Civil Engineering, 3.85 GPA),
Phillip Fishburn (Computer Engineering, 3.89) and
Bennett Gagnon (Economics, 3.48) were all named honorable mention Academic All-Conference on the men's side. Fishburn was Academic All-WCC last season, while Gagnon was honorable mention. Clusserath, Fishburn and Gagnon all had top-five finishes this season.
A WCC-record 31 men's student-athletes in all achieved a GPA over 3.5, of which 16 reached the 3.75 mark. An unprecedented 44 women's student-athletes achieved a GPA of 3.50 or higher, while 29 met or exceeded the 3.75 mark. Both stand as WCC records.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the West Coast Conference selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.
