SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's tennis team showed grit in a 4-2 win over UNLV on Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz.
Haruna Tsuruta got the clinching point, but it was a team effort as GU cruised to the doubles point and then won a pair of three-setters and another in tiebreak fashion to hold off the Rebels.
"This is a great team win for us," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "UNLV is a really competitive team from top to bottom, but I really thought our fitness played a big part in our success. Doubles was huge for us, and I hope we can use this momentum into tomorrow's match against Arizona State. They are a great team, and really well-coached. We have a tough task ahead, but we're really excited for the opportunity."
The Zags started the day off with a win in doubles, taking the point with victories at Nos. 2 and 3. On No. 2, Domonique Garley and Kate Ketels rolled to a 6-2 victory, followed by a strong finish from Haruna Tsuruta and Alex Bourguignon at No. 3. The latter Zag duo won the last three games for a 6-3 victory to clinch the doubles point.
After UNLV tied the score at 1-1, Graciela Rosas put GU back in the lead with a three-set victory at No. 2. She beat Izumi Asano 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. Domonique Garley extended GU's lead momentarily with a 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 5, but UNLV countered with a win at No. 3 to pull back to within one at 3-2.
Haruna Tsuruta then battled back after dropping the second set to take the win on No. 4 and clinch the team victory for the Zags. She beat Anna Bogoslavets 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
Gonzaga will be back on the court on Sunday against No. 20 Arizona State at 10 a.m. Live video and stats will be available on the women's tennis schedule page at GoZags.com.
