LAKE NATOMA, Calif. - The Gonzaga women's rowing team grabbed a pair of wins at the Hornet Invitational on Saturday morning on Lake Natoma just outside of Sacramento, Calif.
The Zags battled teams from Sacramento State, San Diego State and Kansas State in the four-race regatta.
"We were pleased with the outcome of our boats," head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "We have three tough weeks of travel, so it was good to get some tough competition. We are grateful to get into this field late, Sacramento State was a great host."
GU started the regatta off with a five-second victory in the varsity eight boat with a time of 6:40.4 over the 2,000-meter race. That bested San Diego State's 6:45.3 and Sac State's 6:48.9.
In the second varsity eight, Gonzaga took another victory, this time by less than two seconds. GU came in with a time of 6:52.0 ahead of Sac State's 6:53.6.
GU took second in the final two races of the day, coming in just one second off the pace in the varsity four with a time of 7:48.5 and nine seconds back in the third varsity eight at 7:02.1.
The Zags head to Mission Bay for the San Diego Crew Classic next weekend on March 24-25.
