Zags in nine events this upcoming season
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's golf team released their 2018-19 schedule Wednesday. The Zags play in four events during the fall, beginning with the Mark Simpson Invitational in Erie, Colo., on Sept. 24, and then five tournaments in the spring.
The Zags return to the Mark Simpson Invitational at the Colorado National Golf Club on Sept. 24. The two-day event is hosted by Colorado. GU placed 12th at the tournament in 2016, led by a 24th place finish by Ryan Gaske. Colorado and Utah tied for first place at 22-under par at the eighth annual event last season.
On Oct. 1-2, the Bulldogs are back in the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno, Calif. Fresno State hosts the fifth annual event at the Dragonfly Golf Club. Watney turned pro in 2003 following a career at Fresno State from 2000-03. He has since earned 49 career top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour. BYU defended its title last year, while Gonzaga placed 14th.
On Oct. 15, the Zags return to the Bill Cullum Invitational for the first time since 2013. The event is in its 23rd year, and the hosts, Cal State-Northridge brings the tournament back to the Wood Ranch Golf Club. Utah State won the team title in 2017. GU makes its sixth appearance at the event in the last 14 seasons. The Bulldogs came in fifth place at the 2007 tournament.
Once again, the Bulldogs close the fall at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii, from Nov. 2-4. It's the fifth year of the growing event, and the fifth straight appearance from Gonzaga in the tournament. The field has included some of the top programs from across the country. Four years ago, the Zags recorded the program record for lowest team total in a round at 274.
Last year at the tournament, GU totaled a 285 (+1) in Round 3, the team's lowest round total of the fall, and climbed to 11th on the team leaderboard. LSU won the team title at 31-under (821).
For the second straight season, Gonzaga opens its spring slate at the Loyola Intercollegiate on Feb. 23. The two-day tournament is played at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz. Loyola University Maryland hosts the event for the sixth straight year. The tournament has a long history known as the Snowman Getaway on the par-72 Palms Course.
The Bulldogs set a new program record 54-hole total of 836 (-28), finishing in a tie for fourth in 2017. On the first day of the event last season, matched a program-record with a 274 (-14) second round total. Matthew Ruel's second round 65 (-7) matched the lowest round in program history.
On March 10-12, the Zags host the Bandon Dunes Championship for the 10th straight season. The tournament has rotated between the resort's four beautiful courses on the Oregon coast the past nine years. This season, the championship will be played on the Bandon Dunes Course.
Gonzaga makes its debut at the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational on April 1. The two-day event is in its sixth year at the prestigious Chambers Bay Golf Course, which hosted the 2015 U.S. Open. Some of the best programs on the west coast have appeared at the tournament over the past five seasons. Last year, San Francisco placed first at 16-over.
The Zags make their annual appearance in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Ariz., on April 8-9. GU has appeared in the event in each of the past nine years. They won the tournament in 2013 by six strokes. Last season, the Bulldogs came in eighth place, led by an 11th place finish by Nick Nolan.
The 2019 West Coast Conference Championships will be played in Stockton, Calif., from April 25-27. Gonzaga placed ninth at last year's WCC Championships.
