Zags finish 11th; Magruder ties for 24th
ERIE, Colo. – Gonzaga men's golf was even-par in the final round of the Mark Simpson Invitational Tuesday. The Zags had a 288 (E) team total in the third round at the Colorado National Golf Club.
Gonzaga's Charlie Magruder climbed the leaderboard with a three-under par (69) final round. He finished the tournament three-over (219) in a tie for 24th. The sophomore started the day on Hole 8, and was six-under after 15 holes. He made seven birdies in the final round. Magruder finished the tournament with 12 birdies and went three-under on the course's Par-4 holes.
As a team, GU was 31-over (895) in the 54-hole tournament. The Bulldogs opened the event with a 296 (+8) in the first round, before a 311 (+23) in Round 2.
Freshman Brentt Salas was two-under (70) for the Zags in Round 3. His final round featured four birdies and 12 pars. He tied for 59th at 11-over (227) in the event.
Nick Nolan tied for 69th place at 13-over (229). He was eight-over (80) in the third round. Chris Mogg (+14, 230) and Holden Backes (+15, 231) tied for 75th and 79th. Mogg carded a 73 (+1) Tuesday, while Backes was four-over (76). Mogg's final round included two birdies and 13 pars.
"It was nice to finish up the tournament with our best round," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Charlie played really well and had it to six-under at one point. He played solidly all week for us. Brentt also came back strong today with his two-under round, which is a great way to end his first collegiate event. Chris was steady all week and had a lot of opportunities to shoot under par but the putts weren't falling. He was never in danger of a bad round today, hitting 14 greens and having great speed in his putts."
Colorado placed first on the team leaderboard. The hosts have won or shared the team title in each of the past six years. The Buffaloes were 14-under (850) in the tournament, including a six-under (282) finish in the third round. Utah was second at 12-under (852).
Utah's Kyler Dunkle took medalist honors winning the tiebreaker over Colorado's Trevor Olkowski. Both golfers were nine-under (207) in the event and four-under (68) in Round 3.
Gonzaga has a short break before traveling to Fresno, Calif., for the Nick Watney Invitational on Oct. 1-2. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
