GU won three of four doubles and five of six singles matches on the day
SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women's tennis team won three of its four doubles matches and five of its six singles matches on the first day of action at the Gonzaga Invitational Friday at the Stevens Center.
Hosting Portland, Montana State and Idaho, Gonzaga was able to sweep three doubles matches against the Vandals and win in straight sets in each of its five singles victories over the Bobcats.
"I was pleased with how we competed today," head coach DJ Gurule said. "We had some nerves playing at home for the first time with a lot of the freshmen, but once we settled down and got in the groove of our gameplan, we saw a lot of success."
In doubles play, Cate Broerman and Taylor Gruber earned an 8-4 win on Court 1, while Kate Ketels and Vlada Medvedcova earned a tiebreak win 8-7(4) on Court 2. On Court 3, a pair of GU freshmen in Jenna Sloan and Maria Frampton won the final three games to get an 8-6 comeback win.
Then in singles, Broerman defeated MSU's Laura Mary 6-1, 6-0, and Ketels followed shortly after with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Caitlin Ward.
Gruber earned a 6-0, 6-4 win over Mirte Van Baelen, and Sloan added GU's fourth singles win of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daphne Haverkamp.
On No. 3, Medvedcova faced a 5-2 first-set deficit, but rallied to win five straight games and take the opening set 7-5 before finishing off the match with a 7-6(3) tiebreak win..
