Two Zags in the top 10 overall, GU in sixth as a team
KANE'OHE, Hawai'i — Gonzaga women's golf got off to a slow start, but came on strong in the second round of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kane'Ohe Hawai'I on Tuesday.
Playing two 18-hole rounds, GU sat in a tie for sixth place after the first round with a 21-over 309, but improved by 11 strokes as a team with a 298 in Round 2.
"We got better as the day went on," head coach Brad Rickel said. "Jessica [Mangrobang] is really impressing me this spring. Her attitude and golf has been exactly what we are looking for from her. Quynn [Duong] played well all day, too. This is the first time four of our players have ever played in Hawai'i, so we just need to keep figuring out the wind and the green and hopefully we can get off to a better start tomorrow."
The Zags showed consistency in the second round with all four scoring players shooting76 or better, led by Quynn Duong's even par 72. She posted three birdies and three bogeys in the round and sits in a tie for seventh overall after a first-round 75 (+3).
Jessica Mangrobang was solid in both rounds as well, backing up a first-round 74 (+2) with another 74 to remain in the top 10 overall at four-over for the tournament.
Freshman Federica Torre shaved three strokes from the first to the second round, capping the day with a four-over 76, while Francesca Santoni cut five strokes in the second round to match Torre's 76 (+4).
Gonzaga will be back on the course at the Kane'Ohe Klipper in Kane'Ohe, Oahu, Hawai'I on Wednesday for the final round of the 54-hole tournament. The shotgun start is scheduled for 8 a.m. HST/11 a.m. PT.
