Zags in fifth place after first round in California
STOCKTON, Calif. – Gonzaga's Charlie Magruder is two-under (70), following the first round of the 2019 West Coast Conference Championships at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Magruder is tied for seventh place entering the second round. He was three-over on the front-nine Thursday, but five-under on the back-nine. The sophomore made four birdies and eagled the 11th hole. He was two-under on the course's Par-4 holes with an average 3.80, and three-under on Par-5 holes (4.25).
All five Zag golfers finished within five strokes of each other on Day 1. GU is in fifth place at two-under (286).
Chris Mogg is tied for 11th at one-under (71). He made 11 pars and four birdies in the first round. The Sammamish, Wash. native, was three-under on the course's Par-5 holes (4.25).
Tyler Munetake and Nick Nolan are even-par (72) and one-over (73). Munetake is tied for 18th, while Nolan is tied for 28th. Munetake made 13 pars and three birdies, and was even-par on the front and back nine. Nolan made four birdies in Round 1. Grant Johnson made 13 pars Thursday. He is three-over (75) in a tie for 33rd.
"Much more consistency through the lineup today," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "There were some really tucked pins which made it difficult to get the ball close to the hole a number of times but also some really accessible pins. We did a good job of navigating the tough ones and took advantage of a good number of the accessible ones.
"Charlie posted our lowest score with a great comeback on the back nine after a slow start. Chris, Tyler and Nick were steady all day and Grant played better than he scored. I'm pleased with our start but I know we're capable of posting a lower score on this course. We're playing well as a group and we're looking forward to tomorrow."
San Francisco is in first place at 14-under (274). BYU is in second at 10-under (278). USF's Toby Briggs is on top of the leaderboard at six-under (66). Two golfers are tied for second at five-under (67).
The Bulldogs start the second round Saturday at 8:25 a.m. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
