Josh Perkins was selected to the Division I-AAA ADA Men's Scholar Athlete Team for the second straight season. The 10 winners of the 17th Annual Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA) Scholar-Athlete Awards presented by ARMS Software were announced by the DI-AAA Athletics Directors Association Tuesday.
Perkins finished his illustrious career second in NCAA Div. I history with 134 wins, with only 19 losses. He played more games (153) than any other active player in the nation this season, and was one of only 15 players in NCAA Div. I history to play 150 games in a career.
Perkins became Gonzaga's all-time assist leader with 712 in his five-year stint. His 712 assists rank fifth in West Coast Conference history. The redshirt senior's 234 assists in 2018-19 are the most in a single season in program history, while his 54 steals rank eighth. He is second all-time at GU with 178 steals in his career, fifth with 251 made three-pointers and 12th with 1,562 points. This season, Perkins was seventh in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.12), eighth with 234 assists and 16th averaging 6.3 assists per game. He led the WCC this season in total steals and assist-to-turnover ratio.
Perkins was a Bob Cousy Award Finalist for the top point guard in the country. He was tabbed All-West Coast Conference First Team for the second time and was named WCC Player of the Week twice this season.
Perkins completed his degree in Sport Management and is wrapping up his master's degree in Organizational Leadership. He finished his undergraduate career with an impressive 3.24 GPA and currently holds a 3.66 GPA in his graduate program. In each of the last two years, the Park Hill, Colo., native has received West Coast Conference All-Academic team recognition. He also earned his way onto the WCC Commissioner's Honor roll list the past three years.
Basketball players from all Division I-AAA ADA member institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the nominees is required to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.20 - on a 4.00 scale - in undergraduate study and have been a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletics credentials. Nominees must have participated in at least 50 percent (50%) of the team's games listed on the nomination form. To be eligible for nomination to the Scholar-Athlete Team, he/she must have reached junior academic standing at their institution (ineligible athletics transfers are NOT eligible).
Dylan Windler, an accounting major from Belmont University, who owns a 3.74 GPA, was named the Division I-AAA ADA Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
"Once again, our association is excited to announce this year's men's and women's basketball Scholar-Athlete Teams and Awards recipients," stated Division I-AAA ADA Scholar-Athlete Team Selection Committee Chair and University of Portland Vice President for Athletics, Scott Leykam. "This was an extremely deep pool of nominees with many deserving winners. Our sincere congratulations to all of those who have been honored."
A special Review Committee of Division I-AAA Athletics Directors were responsible for selecting the winners. The 2019 Review Committee consisted of: Scott Leykam (Committee Chair), University of Portland; Amanda Braun, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Chasse Conque, University of Arkansas - Little Rock; Irma Garcia, St. Francis College; Robert Lineburg, Radford University, Philip Hutcheson, Lipscomb University; Jean Lenti Ponsetto, DePaul University; Kenneth Siegfied, California State University Bakersfield; and Marianne Reilly, Manhattan College.
