Bulldogs earn the automatic berth to the NCAAs
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team claimed its fifth-straight and 18th overall West Coast Conference Championship on Saturday on Lake Natoma, punching its fifth-straight ticket to the NCAAs.
Finishing with 40 points, the Zags' varsity eight and second varsity eight clinched victories to secure GU's sixth-ever trip to the NCAAs.
On Saturday, the second varsity eight edged Loyola Marymount by less than a second, finishing 00.966 head of the Lions with a final time of 6:48.365. The Bulldogs varsity eight sealed the win with a nearly four-second victory over San Diego, finishing with a time of 6:31.773.
"I'm extremely proud of all their hard work and dedication," head women's rowing coach Marisa Wortman said. "They have been fully committed to continuing their tradition of success and improving the speed of the team. I'm excited to see how fast we are against the top teams in the country."
WCC All-Conference Honorees
Senior Lauren English was named the WCC Rower of the Year and All-WCC. She is a two-time all-conference selection and the sixth Zag to win rower of the year. For the third-straight year, Alexa Jadallah was named WCC Coxswain of the Year, the fifth-straight Zag to win the honor. Freshman Grace Cahalane was named the WCC Newcomer of the Year, and head coach Marisa Wortman was named coach of the year, the fifth-straight season that Gonzaga has taken home that honor. Lindey English, Zoe Calambokidis and Lauren McCallum joined Lauren English on the All-WCC team; Calambokidis and McCallum are first-time honorees while Lindey English earned the honor for the second time in her career.
"We were so happy to see our hard work pay off today and to check off the box toward our bigger goal—NCAAs," Lauren English said. "It was really special, especially for the seniors, to capture our fourth championship during our time at GU. We are proud of how we raced today, and we are excited to keep pushing our limits as we train for nationals."
The Zags will be making their fifth-straight trip to the NCAA Championships, May 29-June2, at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind.
