PULLMAN, Wash. – Gonzaga women's golf battled wind and rain on a 36-hole day at the WSU Cougar Cup to sit in 13th as a team after a pair of eight-over rounds on Monday in Pullman, Wash.
Playing the Par-72 Palouse Ridge Golf Club, Gonzaga's underclassmen led the way with freshman Alyssa Nguyen posted the best round and total of the day for the Zags. After an opening-round 76 (+4), Nguyen came back with five birdies in the second round to shoot a team-best two-under 70 and move into 28th overall in the tournament.
Sophomore Quynn Duong shot the team's best opening round with a one-under 71, but followed with a 76 (+4) in the second round to sit at three-over and in 36th for the tournament. Freshman Cassie Kim followed an opening-round 76 (+4) with an even-par 72 in the second round to move up to 42nd.
"I am very happy with our first tournament day of the season with our young team," head coach Brad Rickel said. "Starting two freshmen and two sophomores, everyone had at least one great round. I am extremely impressed with our freshmen, and for them to shoot 70 and 72 in the second round of a 36-hole day is amazing."
Sophomore Federica Torre shot 74-78 to sit in 65th overall, while senior Jessica Mangrobang ended the day at +10 in 72nd overall.
Gonzaga will be back on the course at Palouse Ridge for the final round with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Check GoZags.com for links to live scoring on Golfstat.
