Senior Jessica Mangrobang leads the tournament at -2 thru 36 holes
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's golf team battled a windy, cool day and came out on the top of the leaderboard, led by solo leader Jessica Mangrobang, through the first 36 holes of the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate Invitational.
Playing the Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course, GU combined to shoot an even-par 284 in the first round and a three-over 287 in the second round to lead the team race by 12 shots over Nevada and Idaho.
"It is really fun to have a team back in the mix," head coach Brad Rickel said. "We are so young and talented, and the great thing is, we are all pointed in the same direction with the same goals. Despite the weather, the team just kept marching forward today. We are really looking forward to tomorrow."
Mangrobang, the only senior in the lineup, followed up an even-par 71 with a two-under 69 to take the outright lead by two shots. She's the only player in the field under par through 36 holes.
Sophomore Quynn Duong posted the best individual round of the day for the Zags, opening with a three-under 68. She followed up with a four-over 75 to sit in a tie for third overall at +1.
Freshman Alyssa Nguyen finished strong on the day, following her opening-round 74 (+3) with a second-round 70 (-1) to place in a tie for seventh at +2.
Sophomore Federica Torre was consistent on the day, opening with a one-over 72 and finishing with a three-over 74 to sit in a tie for 17th overall at +4.
Cassie Kim rounded out the lineup with a 73 (+2) and 74 (+3) in her two rounds, keeping all five Zags inside the top 25 of the 87-player field.
GU wraps up the tournament at Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course on Tuesday with the final 18 holes, beginning with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
