Zags are in ninth following second round
HENDERSON, Nev. — Gonzaga's Zach Stocker carded a 68 (-4) in the second round of the 2021 West Coast Conference Men's Golf Championships Friday. He rose to a tie for 16th place on the leaderboard at the Reflection Bay Golf Club.
Stocker's collegiate career low round, which was also the second-lowest round for the Zags this season, featured seven birdies and nine pars. He made five straight birdies to close the front-nine, going six-under (30) on the first nine holes of the day. Stocker is two-under (142) after Round 2. He started the day tied for 33rd.
Charlie Magruder is tied for 34th at three-over (147). He was two-over (74), making five birdies Friday. Cameron Nicklos is close behind in a tie for 37th with a two-round total of 148 (+4). The senior was four-over (76) in the second round. Jace Minni (+6, 150) and Matthew Ruel (+8, 152) are in 40th and 43rd.
"Up and down day today," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We got off to a terrible start but played decently in the middle and then had a tough finish. The course was definitely gettable with just a bit of wind on the starting holes and not much to worry about after that. Zach had a really good day, tearing up the front nine with a 30 and ultimately posting a four-under round."
Gonzaga is in ninth place as a team at nine-over (585). The Bulldogs were eight-over (296) on Day 2. GU will not complete the tournament as a team due to COVID-19 protocols within the program. Minni will play as an individual in the third and final round after clearing contact tracing.
Eighth-ranked Pepperdine leads the field at 35-under (541). The Waves have a 15-stroke lead over second place BYU. Pepperdine had a 272 (-16) team total in Round 2. The Waves' Clay Feagler climbed six spots to the top of the leaderboard after carding a 65 (-7) Friday. He's at 11-under (133), with a one stroke lead over teammate Dylan Menante entering the third round.
Saturday's final round tees off at 7 a.m. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
