Zag helps national team qualify for 2023 World Cup
QUINDIO, Colombia – Gonzaga women's soccer student-athlete Sophia Braun and her Argentinian national team won the third-place match at the 2022 Copa America Friday. The 3-1 victory over Paraguay qualified Argentina for the 2023 Women's World Cup.
Braun became the first Zag to ever be on a team that qualified for the Women's World Cup. The 2023 edition of the biggest soccer tournament in the world is being held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to Aug. 20, 2023.
Friday in front of a large crowd at Estadio Centenario, Braun played a full 90 minutes in the win over Paraguay. Argentina evened the match with a goal in the 78th minute, before taking the lead with a thrilling goal in the 90th minute and another a minute late.
Braun played the full match in a 1-0 semifinal loss to the host Colombia. Starting as center back, the senior held her own in front of a sold-out raucous crowd.
