Kristen Garcia Takes Home WCC Runner of the Week Honors

SAN MATEO, Calif. – After a dominant outing in Gonzaga's home dual against Eastern on Friday, Kristen Garcia was named the WCC University Credit Union Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week, as announced by the Conference on Tuesday.

A three-time nationals qualifier, Garcia took first overall at the Gonzaga Duals last weekend, shattering the program's 4K record during her first race of the fall. Her 12:50.7 time led seven Zags in the Top 10, and a Top 6 that ran the six fastest 4K times in program history in succession. Rosina Machu (second, 12:51.2), Brittney Hansen (third, 13:08.1), Caramia Mestler(13:14.8), Makenna Edwards (sixth, 13:23.9) and Kate Donaldson (ninth, 13:37.7) all surpassed the prior record of 13:40.6 set by Jordan Thurston in 2016, with Anna Grabowski (10th, 13:43.0) and Ireland Robertson (11th, 13:48.4) setting the new eighth- and ninth- best 4K times in the record book as well.
For their next meets, the Gonzaga women travel to the Battle in Beantown in Chestnut Hill, Mass., on Sept. 23, while the Zag men head to the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., on Sept. 24.
