SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women's rowing team wrapped up competition at the Head of the Spokane this morning on the Spokane River with wins over Oregon State, Washington State and LMU.
"It was a great day of racing for our whole program," head coach Andrew Derrick said. "From our varsity 8s getting some big wins, to great rows in small boats, to nearly 30 women competing as Zags for the first time as freshman, grad transfers, and novices were represented in nearly all of our entries today and all represented Gonzaga spectacularly!"
The 1V8 boat held their own against Pac-12's Oregon State to take first in the 1V8 race with a time of 16:39, defeating OSU by 14 seconds, in the first race of the day. The Zags took control early on in the race and made a sharp turn at Boulder Beach to secure their lead over the Beavers in the 5,000 meter race.
In the same race, the 2V8 finished third overall with a time of 10:51. The Zags topped Oregon State's 2V8 by 11 seconds as they held a lead over the Beavers down the whole course.
The 3V8 boat finished fifth, ahead of Washington State's 2V8/3V8 crew and LMU's 1V8 boat with a time of 10:59. The Zags pulled ahead of WSU for the entire race.
Rounding out competition in the first flight was the 4V8 crew that placed eighth, ahead of LMU and Washington State with a time of 17:40.
In the second flight, Gonzaga's 1V4 topped Oregon State by one second with a time of 18:57. The race was neck to neck down the whole river, but the Bulldogs made a final push to secure the win. In the same race, the 2V4 finished fifth with a time of 19:27, placing ahead of WSU's 4V4 and LMU's 1V4 by over 20 seconds. GU's 3V4 also raced and took ninth with a time of 20:17.
In the second round of collegiate eights, GU's 5V8 placed first with a time of 18:23 over WSU's 3V/4V8 which finished in 18:54. Gonzaga's Novice 8 and 2N8, both finished third and fourth, respectively.
Gonzaga also raced nine pairs to finish off the day. GU's 'B' boat had the best finish of the day at second with a time of 19:47, followed by the 'A' and 'C' boats in third and fourth place. In the rest of the race, GU finished eighth, ninth, 10th, 13th, 14th, an 16th.
"We are incredibly proud of this team and the work they have put in to get the 2023-24 season off to such a promising start," Derrick said. "We need to back today up with leaving our foot on the gas pedal through the rest of fall and winter and if we do I think this team can take a big step forward for our program this spring."
This race was the lone competition for Gonzaga this fall season and will pick up competition in the spring.
