SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga Men's Cross Country and Track & Field Head Coach Pat Tyson announced the signing of one of Oregon prep's top distance runners in Caden Swanson to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday. Swanson is set to join the Zags next fall as the GU men look to defend their first-ever West Coast Conference title while setting eyes on the national stage.
Caden Swanson | Portland, Ore. | Jesuit High School
Swanson joins Gonzaga after a fourth place finish at the OSAA 6A High School Cross Country State Championships in his final prep XC race on Saturday, leading Jesuit to a second place team finish. An eighth place finisher at the State Championships and 52nd place finisher at NXN in 2022, Swanson joins current Zags Josh Augustine and Gus Clevenger as the most recent Jesuit alumni under Tyson. The trio led the Crusaders to a runner-up finish at the Nike XC Nationals last fall. Jesuit is coming off a recent Metro League Cross Country title on Oct. 25, led by Swanson's 15:23.15 winning time, and looked to defend the State 6A team title after running away with the trophy last year, placing four runners in the top eight. Swanson touts a 14:58.4 5K PR, a mark he hit with a third place finish at last year's Metro League Championships in Beaverton, Ore.
"I chose Gonzaga because of Coach Tyson and the amazing community and culture surrounding the team and the school," Swanson said. "When I took my visit, it felt like a home away from home and a place that I could really see myself thriving for the next four years of my life. As soon as I stepped on campus, I felt welcomed by everyone as if I was already a student attending Gonzaga."
Tyson on Swanson: "Caden is one of the best prep distance runners in the state of Oregon! He's a great student and great competitor," Tyson said of his newest signee. "Caden will definitely develop and thrive in the Gonzaga program!"
