SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga junior
Julian Strawther announced Monday that he submitted his name for the 2023 NBA Draft.
"First I would like to thank god for blessing me with opportunities I could've only dreamed of, and for my family and friends who've always being there for me," Strawther said. "Your support will never be forgotten. My time at Gonzaga has produced some of my greatest memories and strongest relationships. I would like to thank my coaches, teammates, and the entire Bulldogs staff, who have helped me grow, not only as a player, but as a man, and I'll be forever thankful for the support that Spokane has shown the kid from the bright lights of Vegas. After talked with those closest to me, I have decided to declare for the 2023 NBA Draft."
Strawther, a First Team All-West Coast Conference selection, was second on the team averaging 15.2 points per game, which was also 10th in the league. His 17.6 points per conference game ranked eighth. He also grabbed 6.2 rebounds per outing. He was one of five finalists for the Julius Erving Award, which is given to the nation's top small forward.
The Las Vegas native scored 20 or more eight times this season, including a 40-point outburst at Portland on Jan. 28. He was 8-for-12 from behind-the-arc in that road victory. The junior had 28-point scoring efforts at Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine on Jan. 16 and 18. Against Kentucky, the junior had a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds. Strawther recently was named to the WCC All-Tournament Team.
Strawther opened the NCAA Tournament with a 28-point effort against Grand Canyon, making three shots from behind-the-arc, and pulling down 10 rebounds. He had a memorable 16-point performance against UCLA in the Sweet 16 hitting the game winning three-pointer in the final seconds.
Strawther helped the Bulldogs advance to their 24th straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2022-23, along with their eighth consecutive Sweet 16 and fifth Elite Eight in the last eight tournaments. Gonzaga finished the season at 31-6, going 14-2 in West Coast Conference play, winning the league regular season title for a national-best 11th straight season.
