Zags pick up three more PRs on the day
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's and women's track wrapped up their two-day stint at The Podium on Saturday with the Spokane Indoor Challenge, which began Friday evening. The Spokane Sports Showcase also ran Friday, as teams from up and down the West Coast brought some of their top runners to compete.
The Zag women opened competition at the Indoor Challenge Friday evening in the women's distance medley relay. It marked the first time Head Coach Jake Stewart's squad competed in the DMR since the 2021-22 indoor season. Maria Taggi, Ellie Armbruster, Willow Collins, and Anna Grabowski took part in the meet's only event on Friday, placing second with a time of 12:03.26. For Armbruster and Collins, this race came just hours after each securing new program records in the 400m and 800m events, respectively.
In the women's mile, Jillian Greene was the highest placing Zag, a fourth place finish in 5:10.95. Camille Broadbent (5:19.14) and Kate Ferrell (5:19.35) each earned PRs with top ten finishes in the event as well.
The women's 400m saw Bailee Carr for the second straight day. On Friday, she earned the program second-best time behind Ellie Armbruster's new PR and record improvement at the Showcase. Saturday, Carr just missed another PR, placing tenth with a time of 1:00.58. Emma Larson made her 400m collegiate debut with a time of 1:03.64.
In their final event of the day, the men showed out in the 3000m race in both heats while securing eight of the top ten placements. After Luke Alfonso ran away with a victory in the first heat, Mason Kissell followed suit in the second to take the overall win with a PR time of 8:16.31, a near seven-second margin over the next finisher. Kissell was one of five Zags to record PRs in the event.
