Frydenlund, Armbruster, and Smith ink new records on the day
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's and women's track returned to the rubber Saturday at the Sam Adams Classic on Whitworth's campus, the 18th annual of its kind. Picking up where they left off in the indoor season, the program top ten lists saw new names and times for both squads.
Prior to Saturday, the men's 3000m list had times that were over ten years old, including one as old as 1991. When the race concluded, eight new times entered the list, including a new program record from Wil Smith. His 8:05.36 is a seven-second improvement of Yacine Guermali's 2019 record. Bryce Cerkowniak (8:13.21), Jacob Alfonso (8:19.06), Drew Kolodge (8:24.15), Ansel Tucker (8:26.36), Aidan Baughan (8:27.90), and Nick Braz (8:29.74) all added their names to the list on Saturday as well.
In the women's 2000m steeplechase, Jessica Frydenlund made her collegiate debut with a new program record of 6:57.15. Frydenlund arrived at Gonzaga last fall after recording the fourth fastest 2000m steeplechase time in the country in her senior season at Anacortes High School.
Brittney Hansen earned a spot on the women's 1500m list with a 4:30.22, the seventh-fastest time in program history.
In total, 35 personal bests were earned on the day, setting the stage for yet another historic track season for Gonzaga.
