WROW: Gonzaga's Varsity Eight Defeats UCLA, Miami, and Tulsa

The Lake Natoma Invitational continues tomorrow

LAKE NATOMA, Calif. -- The Gonzaga women's rowing team completed the first day of the Lake Natoma Invite with multiple victories, including the Varsity Eight sweeping #20 UCLA, (RV) Miami and Tulsa.

"I am really proud of the effort, execution, and ultimately the performances our boats laid down today in representing our program," head coach Andrew Derrick said. "The Varsity four did a great job of putting aside a rough week of practices and performing well and even improving through the day. The 2v8 and 2v4 also saw significant gains after a solid morning showing, but top honors to the v8 this weekend for managing to put their bowball across the line ahead of some really great competition."

In the morning races, the Varisty 8 boat defeated UCLA and Tulsa, by finishing with a time of 6:29.3. Tulsa took second in the race while UCLA placed third. The Varsity 8 continued its success from the morning session as they also won in the afternoon race with a time of 6:48.7, ahead of Miami and UCLA. Miami placed second with a time of 6:52.7 while UCLA finished in 6:57.7.

"We were very happy with our performance and we are excited for the next opportunity," Isabella Barstow said. "Also it's fun to go fast."

The second varsity eight boat placed second in the morning race, with a time of 6:51.9. Only UCLA's boat of 6:48.7 finished ahead of the Zags as GU defeated Tulsa and UCLA's 3V8 boat.

"In the 3rd 500, we were able to take seats back from UCLA and excited to get after it for race two," Giovanna Consiglio said.

In the afternoon race, the same crew had an improved margin over UCLA and finished third with a time of 7:09.8.

The 1V4 boat was the next race as they finished second, ahead of Tulsa in the morning session, with a time of 7:41.4. UCLA took first with 7:35.8. In the second race, the boat had an improved margin over UCLA as the took second over the Bruins with a time of 7:51.3. Miami was the only team ahead of them with  7:50.2.

"Particularly proud of the first four's performance," assistant coach Gillian Edgar said. "They had a rough week of practice and were able to not only just get it done, but find progress between races that lead to a flip in results with UCLA during the second session. Excited for the doors this race execution can open for future weeks."

The last boat of the day to compete was the 2V4 boat, who finished second in the morning race with a time of 7:48.6 as they finished ahead of Tulsa. In the afternoon, the Zags took second again with a time of 8:06.1, defeating Miami by three seconds. The crew also improved their margin over UCLA in the second race of the day.

"This was a great day of fair, fast, beneficial racing," Derrick added. "Sac State did a phenomenal job of running races today and getting multiple trips down one of the best courses in the country can't help but make our team better as we keep an eye towards the post-season and conference championships. It seems like all the coaches in attendance got a lot out of the event and want to return next year and hopefully they resurrected the Lake Natoma Invite becomes a bigger and bigger destination for teams in April."

The Zags will race again tomorrow with one session in the morning.
