SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Gonzaga men's team finished up competition at the San Diego Crew Classic with the 2V8 and Novice 8 boats finishing second in their races. The Varsity 8 boat also competed and finished fifth overall.
"We had some great racing this weekend," head coach
Dan Gehn said. "Varsity was 5th over all but did a great job rowing out of the outside lanes in the final. JV was 2nd to Cal and raced a gutsy race pressing all the way down the course."Â
The 2V8 crew finished with a time of 6:27.460, just behind Cal's first place finish of 6:24.677. The Zags finished ahead of UC San Diego, UCLA, San Diego and Purdue.
In the novice race, the Bulldogs finished in 6:33.872, nearly defeating Orange Coast College's first place of 6:33.628. GU finished ahead of UCLA, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, USC, San Diego State and UC Irvine.
"The most exciting race of the day was the novice 8," Gehn added. "They had multiple lead changes with Orange Coast College and were leading with 300 meters to go but got nipped on the last couple strokes finishing second by half a deck."
The 1V8 boat competed in the Cal Cup, where they finished with a time of 6:17.331, ahead of San Diego, Marietta and Purdue. Cal took the title with a time of 6:05.246.
