SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women's rower
Amanda Triebensee won the gold medal with the United States at the FISU World University Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands, this past weekend.
From July 3-6, FISU World University Championship Rowing was in Rotterdam. Some of the top student-athletes from all over the world represented their countries and faced off against each other on the Willem-Alexander Baan.
The United States won their heat by four seconds over the Netherlands, with a time that was about 1.7 seconds better than Canada who won the other heat, allowing them to skip the Repechage.
In the 'A Final' Canada lead the United States through the first 500-meter mark by half a second, with Italy trailing just .3 seconds behind. By the 1000, the U.S. had started to reel in Canada with a few seats gained, but still trailed by .2 seconds at the halfway mark, with Italy also gaining on both.
The third 500 saw the United States stick their bow ball in front for the first time and enter the fourth 500 in the lead by .4 seconds, and Canada started to fade. In the last 500 meters, the U.S. and Italy put the Canadians a full length back as they battled to the line. In the end, the Americans had enough in the tank to claim the Gold over Italy by just two-thirds of a second.
The U.S. team has trained out of Michigan at both University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University since soon after the NCAA Championships in early June and departed for Rotterdam on June 30.
Triebensee found herself staying in stern pair for Team USA, as she ended up as stroke seat in the U.S. Women's 8+.
Triebensee was in Gonzaga's I eight all season, mostly 7 seat. On June 7, she was named CRCA Pocock Honorable Mention All-American, becoming one of only six All-Americans in program history.
