Machu Wins 5000m on Day One of Drake Relays

All three Bulldogs finished in the top four, with two new entries into the program Top Ten
DES MOINES, Iowa – Gonzaga women's track kicked off their three-day slate at the Drake Relays on Thursday, as three Bulldogs raced in the seeded 5000-meter heat at Drake Stadium.
Rosina Machu earned the victory in the seeded section of the 5000m, finishing in 15:54.97. With just over three weeks until the qualification deadline, Machu will sit somewhere in the Top 40 in the West after this weekend's action.
Logan Hofstee and Jessica Frydenlund made their collegiate 5000m debuts on Thursday, stamping their names in the program Top Ten along the way. Hofstee placed third overall in 16:05.90, entering the program ranks at No. 4 while Frydenlund placed fourth in 16:18.73, entering the ranks at No. 8.

Only two total athletes will race tomorrow for the Gonzaga men and women. Wil Smith is the lone Zag in action for the men this week, pursuing a qualifying 5000m time at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, Calif., late Friday night. Willow Collins will take her turn at the Drake Relays, competing in the 1500m earlier Friday evening and looking to move up on the qualifying list.
