Zags Battle Hard at MPSF Championships and Varsity Eight Qualifies for IRA National Championships

LAKE NATOMA, Calif. – Gonzaga men's rowing wrapped up competition at the MPSF Championships this weekend, competing against some of the top West Coast crews on the waters of Lake Natoma as the Varsity Eight boat qualified for the IRA National Championships.

"Great day of racing for us," head coach Dan Gehn said. "The Varsity Eight came through at the end of the race to get through Santa Clara and earn a team qualification bid for the IRA National Championships!"

Gonzaga's top boat finished second in the Petite Final of the Varsity Eight, crossing the line in 6:01.87. Gonzaga's 1V8 boat delivered a competitive performance, finishing only behind UC San Diego with a time of 5:59.275. The race advances the boat to the IRA National Championships

The Bulldogs also competed in the Second Varsity Petite Final, placing third with a time of 6:08.378. Gonzaga held close to early leaders Santa Clara and UC San Diego through the 1000-meter mark and maintained their position to edge San Diego for the third-place finish in a tight field.

Gonzaga's final appearance came in the Third Varsity Eight Grand Final, where they battled through a strong field of conference rivals. The Bulldogs placed fourth with a time of 6:20.321, edging Santa Clara and UC San Diego while finishing behind Washington, California, and Oregon State.

"3V and JV also raced incredibly well in their finals," Gehn said. "I am really happy for this group they have worked really hard this year. It's a great group of athletes!"

Besides the Varsity 8 boat, the Zags wrapped up competition for the spring season. The rest of the Bulldogs will open up their fall season again with the schedule coming out later this year.
