Coach Kiesel retired from a career in education in 2022 after teaching health and fitness and coaching cross country and track at John R. Rogers High School and Mead High School in Spokane Washington. He coached multiple state champions in cross country and track, and two 4A Boys Team Champions at Mead in 2007 and 2008, and was voted Greater Spokane League Coach of the Year twice and was the 4A Boys State Cross Coutry Coach of the Year in 2007. Kiesel was inducted into the Spokane Community College Hall of Fame, the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) in 2009 and the Eastern Washington University Hall of Fame in 2016.
Kiesel was a 2-Time Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) 800 meter champion (1975 & 1976) and member of the school record setting 4X400 meter relay team, 3:11.60 in 1976 at Spokane Community College. He earned NAIA and NCAA Division II All-American honors in 1977 and 1979 at EWU after finishing 4th and 5th place at the National Championship meets, and is the current school record holder at EWU in the 800 meters with a time of 1:48.51. Kiesel won the 1977 Prefontaine Classic 800 meter race.
Kiesel was a member of two state team track champions in 1973 and 1974 at Lincoln, where he placed 2nd in the 880 yard run at the 1974 state championships and was a member of the state championship mile relay team. He also ran the fastest time for the 880 in the state of Washington a week after the state meet, running 1:53.2.
Kiesel graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma Washington in 1974. He then attended Spokane Community College from 1974 to 1976, where he graduated with an AA Degree. Next, he attended Eastern Washington Univeristy from 1976-1980, and graduated with a BA in Education. He earned a Master Degree in Education from Grand Canyon Univeristy in 2018.
