Robert Gray is in his 26th season at Gonzaga University, his 18th year as the men’s only coach after serving in both capacities as the men’s and women’s coach for eight years.

During the 2022-23 season, The Bulldogs finished the season with the program’s second-lowest season scoring average at 291.94.

Under Gray in 2017-18, Gonzaga broke several records during the season, including the lowest team season average in program history at 291.70. The Bulldogs nearly broke that record in 2018-19, posting a 294.26 season average. GU was on pace for another low season scoring average in 2019-20, before the season ended due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In 2015-16, Gray directed Sean Walsh to the NCAA Championships. Walsh was selected co-Player of the Year by the West Coast Conference, and finished his GU career as the program's all-time season and career scoring average leader.

Gray guided James Fahy to the NCAA Championships in 2015, marking the program's first player to ever qualify for the event. Fahy finished his career with a 74.25 stroke average, which sits second in program history. The team finished with a 295.92 scoring average, the lowest in program history.

The Bulldogs posted back-to-back school-record finishes at the West Coast Conference Championships in both 2012 and 2013. The Zags finished a school-best fourth at the 2012 championships, and then made another huge step in the program, tying for third at the 2013 championships.

Gonzaga also earned its first tournament title since 2005, winning the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in 2013.

The 2013 season also saw two players earn All-WCC first team accolades. Fahy - who put together the best finish in school history, placing second at the league championships, and Walsh each earned conference honors. Walsh also became the second-ever Zag to be named WCC Freshman of the Year.

Besides placing fourth at the 2012 WCC Championships, the Bulldogs posted their lowest team total, shooting a 867. Peter Gullickson earned All-WCC first team honors after carding GU’s lowest 54-hole league tournament score with a 212; tying him for sixth.

The Bulldogs had their inaugural All-West Coast Conference selections in 2009 in Derek Cheney and Kyle Huus. The Bulldog duo tied for fifth at 214, the then-lowest 54-hole WCC Tournament score in Bulldog history. Gonzaga’s 54-hole score of 873 was also the team’s then-best in WCC Tournament play.

In 2011 the Bulldogs Travis Johnsen matched Cheney and Huus’ WCC exploits by shooting a 214 to finish fourth overall for the best individual finish in Gonzaga’s history and earned All-WCC first-team honors. Gray also recruited the 2007 WCC Freshman of the Year in Brandon Crick, the first Bulldog to receive that honor.

Seventeen GU men's golfers have earned All-West Coast Conference honors under Gray. And while the Bulldogs are getting it done on the course, they are also achieving in the classroom. Gonzaga has had 25 Golf Coaches Association of America All-American Scholars. Gonzaga received an All-Academic Team award from the Golf Coaches Association of America for having a team GPA of 3.0 or higher 10 times. The Bulldogs have also received the President’s Special Recognition status for a team GPA of 3.5 or better on the All-Academic Team awards for 2010, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020. Under Gray's guidance, 35 Zags have been named Academic All-Conference.

The 2003 West Coast Conference Men’s Golf Coach of the Year, Gray has 26 years of professional experience.

A member of the Washington State University golf team for the 1992-93 season, Gray graduated from WSU in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in landscape architecture. In November of 1993, Gray joined the professional golfing ranks and achieved membership in the PGA of America on Jan. 1, 1997.

Gray became a full time staff member in the summer of 2002 after working several years as an assistant golf professional at Hangman Valley Golf Course in Spokane. Gray and his wife, Joani have two children.
