Dunn began coaching at Gonzaga in 2013. He has had experience as an assistant coach for Cross Country at Shanley High School in Fargo, N.D., as well as track and field at Oak Grove Lutheran High School. Dunn has acquired a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certification. With this Dunn went to Nanchang, China and became the head coach of Track and Field at Nanchang Institute of Technology University. He also taught Sports in America at the University as well as golf lessons. After going abroad Michael worked as an assistant cross country coach at Shanley High School. In the winter of 2012 he became head coach of Oak Grove Lutheran High School's track and field program.

He attended Oak Grove Lutheran High School in Fargo, N.D., and graduated in the spring of 2007. Following high school, he attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., where he continued to compete at the Division III level in both cross country and track and field. He excelled at the 400m, 600m and the 800m throughout college and narrowly missed Division III Nationals as a freshman on the 4x400m relay team. He also competed at the prestigious Drake Relays three times as well as Kansas Relays twice. In May 2011, he graduated college with a B.A. in Communication Studies and a Coaching minor. While at Concordia, Dunn assisted with recruiting for both cross country and track and field. He is currently working on his Master's in Sports Administration at Gonzaga.

Dunn has pursued a vast amount of other sports-related goals; involvement in the 2009 PGA Championship, pre-season NFL football at Lambeau Field, athletic marketing and promotions at the University of Kansas, 2013 NCAA Division II Regional and National Cross Country Championships, 2014 WCC Men's and Women's College Basketball tournament, and working with Gatorade.

The Fargo, North Dakota, native is married to Nicole Dunn, formerly Nicole Woinarowicz, who was a standout distance runner throughout high school and college.
