BULLDOGS MAKE HISTORY: Gonzaga University made history with Monday's 3-2 win at Eastern Washington University, the Bulldogs stringing together three straight wins for the first time in the program's 10-year existence. The Bulldogs have defeated Portland State University, Carroll College and EWU for the trifecta. Three times previously Gonzaga had strung together back-to-back victories, including once last season.
CLOSE TO SINGLE-SEASON WIN RECORD: With five matches remaining in the regular-season, Gonzaga University needs two wins to tie and three to eclipse the single-season school record for victories set in 1997 when the Bulldogs went 8-12-0. This year's six wins are the second-highest total in school history.
STREUFERT TIES RECORD: With her goal in Gonzaga University's 5-2 win last Friday against Carroll College, junior Sara Streufert equaled her single-season record with her 10th goal of the season. She also scored 10 last season after tallying nine as a freshman in 1997. Her 29 career goals are also a school mark, as are her 66 career points.
CARPENTER FINDING THE NET: One reason Gonzaga University has been able to string together a 3-match winning streak is the offensive firepower suddenly being supplied by midfielder Katie Carpenter. She has scored all five of her goals this season during the recent winning streak, getting a pair of goals against Portland State University, one against Carroll College and two more in Monday's 3-2 win over Eastern Washington University. She has five goals and one assist for 11 points.
GETTING REVENGE: After stumbling at home 2-0 to Eastern Washington University earlier this season, Gonzaga University was looking to avenge that defeat when the Bulldogs made the short trek to Cheney, WA, Monday for the re-match. The Bulldogs prevailed 3-2 to take a 3-1 overall lead in the series after posting 10-1 and 5-1 victories in the inaugural meetings a year ago. EWU is in just its third season of women's soccer.
TIME CHANGES: Friday's West Coast Conference men's and women's soccer double-header between Gonzaga University and the University of San Diego will start at noon with the women's match, followed by the men's contest at 2 p.m. This is a change from some schedules, which indicate later start times.
STREUFERT SCORES A PAIR: Multiple-goal matches are nothing new for Gonzaga University forward Sara Streufert, a hometown product from University High. She has six multiple-goal matches in her career, including a school-record four goals twice - in a 7-0 win over Whitman College in 1997 and last season in a 10-1 win over Eastern Washington University. Streufert has 10 goals this season, matching her school record of 10 set as a sophomore. She scored 9 as a freshman in 1997. Gonzaga is 5-1 when Streufert scores two or more goals, including 4-0 at home.
HOME FINALE: Gonzaga University's final home match of the 1999 season will be one week from Friday when the Bulldogs host the University of San Francisco. Gonzaga, with 12 home matches this season, will conclude the season on the road Oct. 31 at the University of Idaho, Nov. 5 at Loyola Marymount University and Nov. 7 at Pepperdine University.
LEAGUE-LEADERS VISIT: Despite the fact Santa Clara University is ranked No. 1 in the country, it's 17th-ranked University of San Diego which sits atop the West Coast Conference standings heading into Friday's noon match at Gonzaga University. USD is 3-0-0 for 9 points in WCC play, while SCU is 2-0-0 for 6 points. USD is 17th in both the Soccer America and Soccer Buzz polls.
PRODUCTION UP: With 28 goals this season, Gonzaga University has already surpassed last year's output of 26 goals. Gonzaga set a school record with 34 goals in 1997.
STILES POINTS: First-year Gonzaga University head coach Shannon Stiles is no stranger to Bulldogs soccer. She was an assistant coach in 1997 under Ric Grenell. Stiles sat out of collegiate coaching last season, and Julie Polsin, an assistant on the '97 staff, was named the interim head coach when Grenell left in the summer of '98 for a youth soccer directorship in Las Vegas, NV. Polsin wasn't interested in retaining the head job, and Stiles was selected late last winter for the position. A Spokane native, she played soccer at Shadle Park High, then attended Santa Clara University where she played in three NCAA Tournament semifinal contests. Her husband, Chris, is also a SCU graduate and played for the Broncos' men's soccer program. Stiles is the first female to head a West Coast Conference soccer program.
