ANCHORAGE, AK - Freshman Ashley Burke collected the first double-double of her young career as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (2-1) blew past host Alaska-Anchorage (1-2) in the first round of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. Burke finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds in a 98-45 win in front of 6,537 at Sullivan Arena.
The Bulldogs broke out of the gates early as two quick buckets from Burke sparked Gonzaga to an early 11-3 lead just four minutes into the contest. Gonzaga then used three 3-pointers by Jessica Malone to blow open the game with a 17-4 run over a six-minute span midway through the first period.
Malone finished the first half with 12 points while Burke added 11 as Gonzaga went to halftime with 44-18 lead. The Zags shot 44 percent in the opening 20 minutes while holding the Seawolves to 21 percent from the field. Alaska-Anchorage committed 15 first half turnovers leading to 22 points for Gonzaga.
Gonzaga used more of the same aggressive defense in the second half forcing another 15 UAA turnovers as the Zags coasted to the second largest victory in school history. The Zags were able to wear down Seawolves post player Bell Jordan by running a constant supply of fresh bodies into the post.
Melanie Tipps and Anne Bickelhaupt came off the bench to score 11 and 7 points respectively for the Bulldogs post game. The Bulldogs had a chance to break the 100-point plateau for only the third time in the school's Division I history, but Triana Allen pulled the ball back out and killed the final 25 seconds of the game.
Malone finished with 14 points while Juliann Laney chipped in 11 points. Bell led the Seawolves with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Jennifer Stoddard added 10.
Gonzaga advances to the championship game against either Iowa or Marquette at 6 p.m. PST.
