LAST TIME OUT: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team pulled out two second place finishes in their last two tournament appearances. Gonzaga lost to the eventual American Dream Classic tournament champions - New Mexico State University 78-71 in the opening game. The Bulldogs downed tournament hosts, Idaho State University 83-68 in their second contest to claim the second slot. The University of Iowa defeated Gonzaga in the championship game 90-73 at the Great Alaska Shootout. Gonzaga knocked out tournament hosts Alaska-Anchorage in the first game 98-45 to advance to the championship. The Bulldogs have not competed in two tournaments in one season since 1996-97 when they placed third in the Gate City Shootout in Pocatello, Idaho and fourth in the Dial Classic in Pullman, Wash. GU has yet to win a Division I tournament.
MALONE AND BURKE COLLECT ALL-TOURNAMENT AWARDS: The Gonzaga University Bulldogs were one of two teams competing in the 2001 Great Alaska Shootout who landed two players on the All-Tournament team. Senior forward Jessica Malone amassed 42 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, breaking the West Coast Conference career 3-point scoring record in the process. Freshman forward Ashley Burke tallied 37 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Burke was also named player of the game in the Bulldogs opening 98-45 win against University of Alaska-Anchorage when she collected 20 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists for GU.
MALONE BREAKS WCC 3-POINT RECORD: Senior forward Jessica Malone is now the leading West Coast Conference all-time 3-point leader. Malone broke the record in the fourth game of the season when she went 6 for 9 during the Bulldogs 73-90 loss to University of Iowa in the Great Alaska Shootout championship game. The Vancouver, Wash. native broke Deana Lansing's (Portland) record of 223. Malone has collected 229 3-pointers and 1351 career points. She needs only 18 more points to break into the top 15 on the WCC all-time career scoring list.
BULLDOGS ORIGINAL ROSTER SHUFFLED: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team's original roster has been shuffled around since the beginning of the season. Freshman guard Ziya Muhammad has entered the Bulldogs lineup during the last two games after being benched with mono since the pre-season. Starting junior guard Celeste Quitiquit injured her knee during the American Dream Classic and it has not been determined how long she will sit out or the extent of her injury. Sophomore forward Cheyenne Brown suffered a tear to her right ACL and will be out for the rest season, according to the women's basketball trainer, Leann Stockton. Junior guard Rikki Jackson will be benched until Dec. 31, for academic indifference. Junior forward Daniela Schroeder quit the team for personal reasons.
GRAVES GOOD THINGS: "It was a good experience for us, we looked good and competed well," said Gonzaga's head coach Kelly Graves about the Bulldogs second place finish in the Great Alaska Shootout. "It was a good cultural experience and good experience on the court, I was really pleased all the way around," said Graves. Graves said he may make some changes in the Bulldogs starting lineup "We have had a few slow starts and it might help to shake things up a little bit," said Graves. The Zags play their next five contests in Washington. Gonzaga travels to Pullman Thursday to play Washington State in the Cougars home opener at 7 p.m. before returning to the Kennel Saturday for a matinee with Saint Martin's College at 2 p.m. "WSU is going to be good and a little hungry," said Graves. "It's going to be a challenge."
