RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Freshman guard Shannon Mathews scored a career-high 22 points Monday afternoon to lead the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (7-5) to a 75-64 non-conference victory over the University of California-Riverside Highlanders (3-7) in Riverside, Calif.
The Highlanders led 58-57 after a layup by Crystal Harris with 8:22 remaining in the game but the Bulldog's Raeanna Jewell hit back to back 3-pointers and never relinquished the lead, finishing with a 18-6 run.
Gonzaga led 34-32 at the half, but were up 29-20 with 6:29 remaining. UCR used a 12-3 run to tie the score at 32-32 but Mathews sank a 2-point bucket with 42 seconds left to give GU the lead going into halftime.
The Bulldogs hit 14-of-29 from three-point range, finishing with a 48.3 percent shooting clip, 45.2 percent from the field and a solid 83.3 percent from the free-throw line.
Mathews led the Bulldogs with 22 points followed by fellow freshmen, Raeanna Jewell who collected 19 points and a team-high nine rebounds while Ashley Burke tallied 14 points.
The Highlanders were led by Julie Shaw with a season-high 21 points.
The Bulldogs continue action on the road Wednesday Jan. 2, against Sacramento State University at 7 p.m.
