Gonzaga leads the series 16-13. The Eagles edged the Bulldogs 59-57 last season at the Kennel. Wendy Schuller enters her first as the head coach of the women's basketball program. The Eagles are coming off of a 2000-01 season record of 10-18, tying for sixth place in the Big Sky Conference. The Eagles return four starters and eight letterwinners to the roster. Sophomore Kathleen Nygaard leads the team averaging 9.3 points per game, 5.8 rebounds and 5 assists. Senior forward Allie Bailey has contributed 9.0 points per game, 7.5 rebounds and 10 assists. The Eagles started the 2001-02 season 1-5 against a tough schedule that included DePaul and Georgia Tech. EWU's first win came against Hartford at the Georgia Tech Classic in Atlanta.
VS. WHITWORTH COLLEGE: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team hosts the Whitworth College Pirates Thursday for their 19th meeting. Gonzaga leads the series 15-2. The Bulldogs look to continue their seven game winning streak against the Pirates. Head coach Helen Higgs returns seven letterwinners and two starters including senior guard Erica Ewart who leads the team averaging 19.8 points per game, 6.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists. The 5-10 junior forward, Chrissy O'neal is averaging 11.6 points per game and 7.2 rebounds. Freshman Tiffany Speer has stepped up with 10.0 points per game, pulling down 4.8 rebounds. The Pirates are 4-1 on the season including a 61-50 win against Northwest Conference foe Linfield.
VS. CAL STATE FULLERTON TITANS:The Cal State Fullerton Titans wrap up their Pacific Northwest road trip Saturday night against the Gonzaga Bulldogs at the Kennel at 7 p.m. It has been nine years since the two teams last met, Cal State Fullerton defeated Gonzaga 80-57 at Fullerton, Calif., in 1992. The Titans lead the series 2-0. Barbara Ehardt enters her second season leading the women's basketball program. Ehardt returns all five of her starters and 10 letterwinners. Washington State transfer Tricia Lamb leads the Titans with 11.3 points per game, 1.3 rebounds and 2 assists. Chante Gifford and Heather Hansen are also averaging in the double digits with 10.3 and 10.0 points per game respectively. The Titans enter the week 1-2 before a rare Monday night game against Fresno State. They will touch down at Eastern Washington University Wednesday before heading to Spokane for their Saturday night tilt against the Bulldogs. The Titans compete in the Big West Conference.
LAST TIME OUT: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team sits 3-4 on the season after routing Saint Martin's College Saturday night 79-51 at the Kennel. It was the Bulldogs first regular season win at home since Jan. 2, 2000 when they downed Colgate 67-56.
UP AND COMING: Gonzaga hits the road Tuesday night against their southern neighbors Eastern Washington University at 7 p.m. in Cheney, Wash. The Bulldogs then play their neighbor to the north, Whitworth College Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Kennel. Gonzaga finishes a two-game homestand against Cal State Fullerton Saturday night at 7 p.m. The women's basketball squad spends the remainder of December on the road against Boise State Dec. 14, and University of California-Riverside on New Year's Eve. The Bulldogs don't return to the Kennel until Jan. 5 when they will play the University of Montana at 7 p.m.
GRAVES GOOD THINGS: "I liked our kids effort, we had a few defensive breakdowns in the first half but cleaned it up in the second half," said Gonzaga head coach Kelly Graves about the Bulldogs 79-51 win over the Saint Martin's Saints Saturday. "We got everybody in and all but one got double digit-minutes." The Bulldogs face a tight schedule this week with three games in five days. "We're kind of banged up right now and this might not be the best week to have three games," said Graves. "Eastern is big and they have big post players, they will present a challenge," said Graves about Tuesday's tilt against the Eagles. Freshmen Juliann Laney and Shannon Mathews are stepping up and doing a lot of good things according to Graves. "Juliann is being aggressive and Shannon has 32 assists and only 12 turnovers," said Graves. Overall Graves said he looks for the Bulldogs to become a better first-half team.
