Women's Basketball Defeats San Diego 75-65 In Overtime

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman guard Shannon Mathews scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (10-6, 1-1) to a 75-65 West Coast Conference win over the University of San Diego Toreros (10-5, 1-1) Saturday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The win marked the Bulldogs first WCC victory since Jan. 26, 2000 when they defeated the University of Portland 71-53 at the Kennel. It also marks head coach Kelly Graves first WCC win with the Zags.
Gonzaga led 23-19 at the half before San Diego evened the score in the second half 58-58, sending the game into overtime. The Bulldogs put away 17 points in five minutes to secure the win.
Senior forward Jessica Malone went 3-for-6 from 3-point territory finishing with 20 points. Mathews also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Ashley Burke narrowly missed recording a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds.
The Zags shot 40.4 percent from the field, 30.0 percent from 3-point range and 92 percent from the free-throw line for the second consecutive time. The Bulldogs sank 92.3 percent from the charity stripe in their game against Santa Clara Thursday night.
Marta Menuez paced the Toreros with a team-high 20 points followed by Erin Malich with 14 points. The Bulldogs held the Toreros to a 35.3 percent shooting percentage from the field. The Toreros were 7-1 at home going into Thursday's game.
The Bulldogs play their WCC home opener Thursday night against Pepperdine University at 7 p.m. in the Kennel.
